Recap period: 1940s
We got through the 1940s at last in our recap! This one felt even harder to get through than the 30s, even though there were probably more films we enjoyed. So, let's go through em all!
1940 - Black Friday: This was a gangster horror film with Karloff and Lugosi. Despite the big actors, it was definitely bottom of the barrel for these actors. Not worth the watch.
1941 - Telltale Heart: This was a short film. Not bad. At least it's to the point. But the Telltale films are so odd. They just have a weird dissonance with the original story. It's hard to get in the protagonist's head with these.
1942 - Mad Monster: A mad scientist plus wolfman film. Pretty bad. Not worth the watch.
1942 - Invisible Agent: One of the Invisible Man sequels we hadn't watched originally because it was too much of a spy movie. That said, Peter Lorre makes the film. It was cute in its own way. Not very horror, but again, it's cute.
1943 - Dead Men Walk: This is actually a surprisingly twisty film. Despite not having suuuuper major actors or not being too popular, I'd recommend it. It's an evil twin type story but with lots of unexpected plot points.
1944 - Invisible Man's Revenge: Pretty dark Invisible Man story. But very predictable too. Not worth the watch.
1946 - She-Wolf of London: A quasi-horror with a lot of crazy Gothic family drama. Becomes very much a whodunnit. But it's all right.
1948 - Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein: Originally didn't want to watch these movies because I was afraid they'd be toooo slapstick, like The Three Stooges. But no the comedy is mostly spoken honestly. It's so much fun. And you can tell Lugosi, Chaney, and Strange had fun with it. Yeah, despite the name, you get the Wolfman, the Monster, and Dracula. It's a trip and a treat. Well worth the watch.
1949 - Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff: Despite the big name on screen, Karloff's role is so minor. Abbott and Costello are the real stars here. Fairly fun plot, but the film goes on way too long. There is one Karloff hypnosis scene that is a treat though.
1949 - The Invisible Man Appears: This was the Japanese Invisible Man story. It was all right. Was fun in its own right. Probably one of the "scarier" invisible man stories so far, though that isn't saying much.
All in all, not too much we really missed! The 50s is gonna have a lot of sci fi though!
