Recap period: 1930s
We trudged our way through more "missed" horror films of the 1930s, missed in the sense of, we missed them in our first run-through! Generally, we can see why we missed them. But some of them weren't bad! Won't do faves on these because they were generally not enjoyable haha.
1933 - Mystery of the Wax Museum: The two-tone technicolor was odd here. It might have been our only horror film like that. It was interesting seeing how this would inspire the later Vincent Price one. It felt like the Price one was a shot-for-shot. But because we had seen Price's first, this one just didn't feel that good.
1934 - The Tell-Tale Heart: For a Poe film, it's fairly mediocre. I would have expected a lot more Gothic imagery, but it just focuses more on the MC's madness.
1935 - Mark of the Vampire: Another Lugosi vampire film. It's all right, but I really loved the twist at the very end! Almost worth it just for that.
1935 - Mad Love: Easily one of my favorite Hands of Orlac film. Peter Lorre just makes it. It was super enjoyable because of his performance.
1937 - Night Key: A Karloff gangster film. It was all right. Far from horror though!
1937 - Song at Midnight: The original Chinese version of Phantom of the Opera. It was a good bit of fun! The music was pretty boss, too.
1939 - Face at the Window: I enjoyed this. Especially with the guy who played as Sweeney Todd being the Chevalier. It was fairly edge-of-the-seat plot, and I loved that.
1939 - A War of the Roses historical "horror" film. Not bad. It was crazy seeing Rathbone, Price, and Karloff as fairly historical figures. Just hadn't seen that happening in a film like this. But it works! They rock it all around.
All in all, a lot of mediocrity. But on to the 40s recap!
