1979 - Much suspense in horror!
We officially finished the 70s!!! That said, we actually started making a list of horror films we missed, so we will be starting back over before we go to the 80s lol. It's a lot fewer films in this "recap" session than the original list, so it'll be pretty fast. But yeah, so 1979 was a thing. I loved this year in horror film. Here's what we watched with our faves after!
Alien: My first time seeing it! I loved it. The xenomorph was much puppy, and that made him adorable. I felt so bad for him. Weaver was great. Great story. A jump scare even got me!
The Amityville Horror: Also my first time seeing it. Having been told it was boring first, I actually didn't hate this one. Such a dark story about financial debt and capitalism. Great acting performances, too.
Nosferatu: I don't get the hype behind this one. It was artistic, yeah. A very pretty film. The animal cruelty that actually happened on set takes even more points off for me. I'd rather the original in this case.
Phantasm: I LOVED THIS MOVIE! I had only heard of it in horror music circles. The music was great. The story was wacky. I loved the main characters. It was just such a great movie, and I can't recommend it enough. It's kind of...like if Rocky Horror had a linear plot.
Screams of a Winter's Night: Probably the worst anthology film we've ever seen. I couldn't finish it, but Sin did.
The Visitor: An obscure sci fi horror film. Basically if ET met The Exorcist. I enjoyed it. It was just so entertaining, and it had great actors throughout.
Up from the Depths: A Jawsploitation flick. But like...apparently the director made it a comedy, but the producer edited it to be straight horror. So it's straight horror with these oddly comedic moments throughout that don't make sense. Just...watch the first 11 minutes on YouTube. It's weird.
Tourist Trap: An obscure telekinetic slasher with mannequins. It's a fun time! I really wish there had been sequels to this. I totally could have seen a whole franchise of this slasher, and it would have been a great time.
Killer Fish: More of an adventure Jawsploitation than an actual horror film. Not worth the watch, even with Karen Black.
Dracula: Starring Frank Langella, this is easily the best Dracula film so far, and in my mind it is now the definitive version. Fight me. It had great art direction. The music was by John Williams. Had the best actors for a Dracula film. And the horror actually felt erotic for once.
The Brood: A fun Cronenberg film. Loved the body horror at the end. I just kept not knowing where this film was going. The twists made it so much fun.
When a Stranger Calls: This film handled the phone-is-in-the-house trope way better than Black Christmas. It felt like a surprise to the viewer when that bomb was dropped, rather than already extant knowledge. The whole middle segment was weird. But the start and end were awesome.
Faves! For me, definitely Dracula, Tourist Trap, Phantasm, and Alien. Those were just so good.
Sin: "Amityville, Alien, Phantasm, When a Stranger Calls, Dracula, and The Brood...and Tourist Trap. So practically most of the list lol."
