1975 - Creepy Crawlies!
We finished our list of 1975 horror, and we were pretty impressed! Not quite as good as 1974, but still pretty good. And heads up, we will be watching Rocky Horror, but we're going to a shadow cast performance of it in a couple weeks. There will be a review again of it and some other 1970s films we'll be watching retroactively. But for now, here's what we watched in the list! ^^ As usual, our faves are at the end.
Shivers: This Cronenberg film was our first in the marathon! I appreciated it was a film about sexual disease, even if it's a bit conservative / slut shamey. It was a very cynical film, and it had some definite moments of unrealisticness. But the creature design was fun, and it was pretty entertaining! I can see the appeal of Cronenberg already!
Giant Spider Invasion. Oh boy. This was a treat. Sin was so nervous going into this because of his fear of spiders. But the creature design here is soooo bad. It's a la 50s giant monster horror, and it's so laughably bad. Only worth a watch if you want a bad 70s monster film to watch.
Bloodsucker Leads the Dance: A horribly boring Italian vampire film. Yawn.
Terror of Mechagodzilla: It was all right. I really enjoyed Mechagodzilla as a kaiju, so I was a bit sad to know this marked the end of the Toho Godzilla era. I didn't think it was that bad!
Bug: Oh this was such a fucking joy. Did you Sin is terrified of cockroaches? :D Absolutely loved this. The plot was so different. Usually, plague films start with the personal, then zoom outward to focus on the larger scale, then end in pandemonium or explosions. This one instead starts with the explosion, then the large scale, then the personal. And it's such a treatise on grief and loss. Such a great movie to analyze.
Devil's Rain: So...everyone says this is a notoriously bad movie. Has William Shatner. Has a wacky plot. But like...I thought this had some fucking amazing special effects. I was actually engrossed by the plot. I actually really really liked this one in an unironic way O.o Like...I think it's actually a good film. Feels weird to say, but I'd actually recommend this.
Deafula: Was excited to know a horror film was the first #ownvoices Deaf film. Was less excited to see how Christian it was though! Not a particularly bad film, but the pacing is very, very slow, and it's pretty long!
Stepford Wives: A story brought to you by the same guy as Rosemary's Baby, Ira Levin. I knew what to expect because of that: 1. The woman is definitely right and should have stuck to her guns. 2. Society is totally capable of conspiracies. 3. Men are pigs. And I was right in that prep reading! I loved it and will be excited to see the remakes / sequels.
Autopsy: A surprisingly entertaining film. Plot was a bit all over the place, but the character interactions made it engaging for sure.
I Don't Want to Be Born: A fun evil baby movie a la It's Alive. This one was much more enjoyable though! It was just a lot more sinister, and the director did more with less! I definitely recommend it.
Now for favorites!
For me, definitely Bug, Devil's Rain, and Stepford Wives. They were just all entertaining films!
For Sin: "We didn't have a lot of good ones in 1975. Stepford Wives......That's it. Stepford Wives."
Comment question for you all! What's your favorite bug film? :P
