Eco-horror and more sequels - Horror films of 1972
Phew, we just finished 1972's major horror films. Below, I'll put the list and general reviews, but I'll keep Sin's and my faves for the very end!
Ben: I was nervous about this sequel to Willard. The original was so good! I was scared what would happen now that Willard was gone. But Ben definitely held up as a great film both on its own and as a sequel. Loved it.
Blacula: We actually saw this film last year, but it stays a great film. I've taught this film in a university setting, and it's interesting seeing the different layers of race studies here. Easily one of the better Dracula films by this time too.
Frogs: Eh...not really worth the watch. Some decent eco-horror, but definitely not a must-see.
The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here!: Despite the crazy title, a pretty mediocre film. Not even worth watching as a great "bad" film.
The Blood-Spattered Bride: This one got more and more fucked up as we watched it. The ending was just so violent and crazy that it easily feels like a sick new Poe story. Loved this to our surprise.
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things: Boring.
Beware! The Blob!: This sequel was handled by the same guy in charge of Equinox. Which made sense! Both the original Blog and Equinox were pretty anti-cop, pro-blue collar. So it made sense he'd want to tackle a sequel to the Blog. And fuck, it was written so beautifully. Just the idiot cop who wants all the credit by the end. Ah, I'd love to teach this film. So surprisingly great.
Godzilla vs Gigan: Was an all right Godzilla film. Nothing too exciting.
Dracula AD 1972: I definitely liked the modern Dracula here. Plus, it was cool to see Lee and Cushing in this new setting with their same roles. It felt more "real."
Demons of the Mind: Oh no, incest. How sinful. It was okay as a film. Decently engaging albeit predictable.
Fear in the Night: A Hammer psychothriller that fell flat for me because it was so predictable. It was just too heavy handed to work for me.
Legend of Boggy Creek: A pseudo documentary about a cryptid. Very dull.
Silent Night, Bloody Night: I actually really liked this one! It was cool seeing like...the first full length Christmas horror film. Very slasher-y. Kept getting surprised by who all died.
Tales from the Crypt: I absolutely loved this movie. It didn't have many stories, but the ones they had were all so much fun. I had a blast with the creativity behind it (even though it was just taken straight from the comics).
Blood Freaks: What the actual fuck. This is a movie so bad you have to see. If only for the turkey head drug addict. What the actual fuck.
Blood Feast: This film was an odd exploitation film. Was boring just because of how repetitive it was.
Last House on the Left: I was pretty nervous about watching it, but it didn't show enough to make me suuuuuper uncomfortable. I was surprised that the so-called first rape-and-revenge film was a revenge on the parents' part! Didn't see that coming actually.
Gore Gore Girls: A HGL film. I enjoyed it all right. The comedy was so out there, and even for HGL the violence was pretty out there. But it was engaging all the same?
I Dismember Mama: Damn, this was such an anxious film. I just didn't think it was going to go the directions it did. It just gave me so much anxiety wondering what the MC was going to do next.
Stanley: The snake version of Willard...but worse lol.
Dr. Phibes Rises Again: A fun sequel. A little more violent than the original but just as fun and quirky honestly. I felt the plot was pretty much the exact same though. But all right.
My favorites! Easily Beware! The Blob!, I Dismember Mama, and Tales from the Crypt. They all made me feel things, and that's a plus in my book.
Izzy's: So favorites...Dr. Phibes 2...I had a whole list. I think I just forgot it. Um...that one where he shoots up everyone at the end...what was that one called...(Blood-Spattered Bride)...um...Blacula...There's others, but I can't think of them now. I'm sick, and my brain just does not compute anything.
