More vampires and proto-slashers! - 1971 horror

Finished 1971! Film is really starting to get more entertaining, even as it increasingly gets campier. So here are the films we watched for this year.

Blood and Lace: A major inspiration for Halloween, this film had PERFECT twists, and I'd recommend this to anyone into fucked-up, convoluted stories.

Requiem for a Vampire: A cheesy erotic vampire film, but not really worth the watch even as a bad film.

Dracula vs. Frankenstein: For a versus movie, it was all right. The vampire look is increasingly getting queer, so that's fun. The plot was all right except for the middle.

The House that Dripped Blood: This was a cheesy little anthology film. Had a couple really good supernatural pieces, especially about a demon child! Despite the title, it's not really a haunted house film.

Lust for a Vampire: The second of the Karnstein films. I actually really enjoyed this. It's such a fun trilogy, and I enjoyed the school setting of this film. It was just all around enjoyable.

Twins of Evil: The final film of the Karnstein trilogy. Great actresses, and a great finale to the story! It's just one of those stories every horror fan should watch.

Vampyros Lesbos: Worse than it sounds.

Werewolves on Wheels: Also worse than it sounds. Despite the title, there's not much of werewolf. And too much of wheels.

Willard: It was my first time seeing this rat movie, and I just loved it. I wasn't expecting it to be so entertaining, but I loved Willard and loved the rats, and the ending was so heartbreaking.

Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde: For starters, I love Ralph Bates. He kills it, and his woman counterpart, "Sister Hyde," slays in this movie. Easily the best Jekyll and Hyde film so far.

Daughters of Darkness: A fun Bathory film. I loved the subplots of this, and it had a focus on the running-water myth of vampires. Bathory was such a fun character in this film, very cold and calculating. Reminds me of Tilde Swinton.

Godzillva vs. Hedorah: Oh boy, easily the most heavy-handed Godzilla film, focusing completely on pollution. Still not bad though!

Blood from the Mummy's Tomb: Based on Stoker's Jewel of the Seven Stars, this was a refreshing new take on the Mummy story. That said, the special effects were laughably bad. I'm just like, "Really? The wind is just killing everyone?" It just didn't let me suspend disbelief easily.

Vampire Circus: A fun vampire film, but I could have used more circus! The circus felt like it was just flavor, and it would have worked as a film just fine without it.

Countess Dracula: Another Bathory film. This was good for whole new reasons. It was just deliciously delightful to see this alongside Daughters of Darkness. Way better than the Dracula films.

Abominable Dr. Phibes: A fun comedy with Price. We're super excited to see the sequel actually! It was surprising how comical this was, very slapstick, and it also has a Saw-inspiring scene!

Hands of the Ripper: A bloody whodunnit slasher. Lots of plot issues. But it's worth watching just for the last five minutes.

Virgin Witch: Not worth the watch.

Necromania: We found this film on a porn site. It's by Ed Wood. Watch it. Make it a drinking game if you want. You'll have a blast of a time.

Isle of the Snake People: So sad to see Karloff getting so old. He died before this film came out unfortunately. The film sucked though lol.

I, Monster: A decent Jekyll and Hyde. I think it was one of Lee's best roles for sure. For Cushing, it was okay.

The Headless Eyes: Despite the hype about this film being super gory, it really wasn't. It made Sin a bit uncomfortable with some eye horror phobias. It was okay, I thought!

Black Belly of the Tarantula: Fun horror premise. But otherwise uninteresting. The music was uh...something.

Bay of Blood: A fun Mario Bava proto-slasher. Plot was an utter mess, but the last five minutes had so many twists, I loved it anyway.

Night of Dark Shadows: Nowhere as good as the original Dark Shadows film, but it had some good Dorian Gray vibes at least.

Lake of Dracula: The second of the Toho vampire series. Not as good as the first one, but they got the creepiness down!

So favorites!

For me, my favorites were Hands of the Ripper, Blood and Lace, Dr. Phibes, and Willard. These were just the most enjoyable films for me. I couldn't look away during these three, and I'd watch them again in a heartbeat.

For Sin: "There." Me: "What?" Him: "I sent you a message." Me: "Oh, how was I supposed to know?"

His list:

House that dropped blood
Drac v frank
Dr jeckyll and sister Hyde
Countess Dracula
Dr phibes
Necromania
Night of dark shadows

Him: That way you can't type everything I say! Bow bow bow.
