The Vampire's Revival - Horror films of 1970

So, starting from now on, we're just going to have a blog post for every year. Because...it's a lot of films. And it'll be hard to keep them straight at some point. So, here's what we watched, and our faves at the end with a comment question after! Ancines Woods: This one was such a tough find. When we did, it was a fun serial killer film. It's coded as focused on lycanthropy, but don't expect any actual werewolves! The Blood on Satan's Claw: This was a fun folk horror film, a la Wicker Man. Very sexual and pretty violent, too. Plus, we got to see a demon! Pretty fun plot all around. Dunwich Horror: I was really skeptical of watching our first Lovecraft film. Lovecraft relies so much on the unseen, the indescribable, that I was anxious seeing his work put in a film version. But I actually enjoyed that aspect. The "creatures" had fun silhouettes of indeterminate species, and the sound effects reinforced that. Pretty well done. Terrible plot otherwi...

More reboots but new stories too! - 1968-69

We did finish the 1960s in horror! Personally, I think some of the best films of the 60s were in these last three years, so I'm super excited to talk about them!!! 1968 Night of the Living Dead: I had never seen this movie, but I knew it was considered the start of the modern zombie film. I knew it was in B&W and that it had a Black protagonist but that the director had said that was really just incidental. And I knew at least part of the film had the protagonists trapped in a house. That said, there was a lot I really didn't expect, like the twist of an ending, the ironic dialogue at the start of the film, and the setting up of character archetypes in modern zombie films. All in all, a pleasant surprise. The Devil Rides Out: This was a fun Satanic film by Hammer. Was different seeing Lee in the protagonist role, but it was really enjoyable seeing a furry devil, and it had some fun plot elements that were pretty unexpected. La Marca del Hombre Lobo: For a foreign film that...

Hammer, Sequels, and Monsters! - Horror films from 1966-67

We are actually up to 1970 in our film list, but I realized I was a couple of blog posts behind! So here's our general thoughts on the films we watched as well as our faves at the end! 1966 The Deadly Bees: As someone squeamish about bees, I was a bit anxious going into this one. Despite a couple of scenes, it was pretty okay though. Plot was a bit predictable, but most importantly, it was a fun film. Naked Evil: This was your typical voodoo film. The film had some interesting beats to it, but predictably it was pretty racist. The She Beast: This was weird. Made me think a bit of El Baron del Terror. Had that "evil from the past in modern times now" plot (a la Dark Shadows). It had a cool antagonist though, too. The Plague of the Zombies: Hammer's attempt at a zombie film was interesting. Called back to the old 30s and 40s zombie films in some ways but also felt like an adventure film in other ways. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep: For an underwater monster, I wish we had...
